✏️ The Simple Past in Greek: Easy Verbs, Real-Life Examples + Full Conjugation
Welcome to Matheno Ellinika!
If you're learning Greek, one of the most useful tenses to master early on is the Simple Past — known in Greek as the Aorist (Αόριστος).
We use the aorist to talk about actions that are completed in the past:
“I ate”, “I saw”, “I went”, “I did”.
It’s a must for everyday conversations — and not as hard as it looks!
Let’s start with two very common and useful verbs:
βλέπω → είδα (to see → I saw)
τρώω → έφαγα (to eat → I ate)
Verb 1: Βλέπω → Είδα (I see → I saw)
| Tense | Form |
|---|---|
| Present | βλέπω = I see |
| Simple Past | είδα = I saw |
✅ Full conjugation of είδα (Simple Past of βλέπω):
| Person | Greek | English |
|---|---|---|
| Εγώ | είδα | I saw |
| Εσύ | είδες | You saw (singular) |
| Αυτός/Αυτή/Αυτό | είδε | He/She/It saw |
| Εμείς | είδαμε | We saw |
| Εσείς | είδατε | You saw (plural/formal) |
| Αυτοί/ές/ά | είδαν / είδανε | They saw |
Tip: "είδα" is an irregular verb — you just need to memorize it!
Examples:
-
Χθες είδα την αγαπημένη μου σειρά.
Yesterday I saw my favorite show. -
Δεν είδα τίποτα.
I didn’t see anything. -
Είδες τι έγινε;
Did you see what happened?
Verb 2: Τρώω → Έφαγα (I eat → I ate)
| Tense | Form |
|---|---|
| Present | τρώω = I eat |
| Simple Past | έφαγα = I ate |

???? Note: “τρώω” becomes “έφαγα” — another irregular but very common verb.
